Kurt Kerns
Few attorneys in the United States carry the reputation and track record that Kurt Kerns has built over decades of criminal defense practice. Known for taking on some of the most challenging and high-profile cases in the country, Kurt has successfully represented clients facing international charges, federal prosecutions, drug conspiracies, and murder trials. His courtroom results and relentless advocacy have established him as a trusted name in criminal defense.
Proven Success in Complex Jury Trials
In federal court, Kurt has demonstrated a level of consistency few lawyers can match. He guided his clients through ten consecutive federal jury trials without a single conviction. When it comes to state-level murder trials, his record is equally impressive: of fourteen murder cases taken before a jury, ten clients were fully acquitted and two others were convicted on reduced manslaughter charges rather than murder. These results reflect his strategic preparation, persuasive trial skills, and ability to connect with jurors.
Leadership and Professional Recognition
Kurt is the founding member of Kerns Law Group but also stands proudly as a part of Warrior Lawyers, where his experience strengthens the team’s ability to defend clients across Kansas and beyond. He has been consistently recognized by peers and national organizations:
- Listed in Best Lawyers in America
- Selected to Super Lawyers for ten consecutive years
- Holder of the AV Preeminent Rating under Martindale-Hubbell’s peer review system, the highest possible distinction in the profession
His legal education continues long after law school. Kurt has completed advanced training at the National Criminal Defense College and studied under some of the nation’s most skilled litigators at Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College, where he now contributes as a member of the staff.
Service to the Criminal Defense Community
Beyond his trial work, Kurt has invested heavily in advancing the criminal defense profession. He served on the Board of Governors for the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and remains a lifetime member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. His ongoing commitment includes teaching and lecturing at criminal defense seminars across the country, where he shares his insight on trial strategy, jury selection, and defending complex cases.
International Defense Counsel
Kurt’s reputation does not stop at America’s borders. He is one of only 26 attorneys in the United States authorized to appear before the International Criminal Court. His work in The Hague, Netherlands, includes defending clients before the International War Crimes Tribunal, most notably serving as lead defense counsel for Commander Vinko Martinovic in a landmark case. These rare appointments place him among a small, elite group of attorneys trusted to handle cases of global significance.
A Trusted Legal Voice
In addition to his courtroom success, Kurt has been called upon as a legal analyst for major media outlets, including Court TV and A&E’s American Justice. Whether in front of a jury, speaking at a national seminar, or providing commentary for the public, his ability to explain the law and advocate with authority has earned him respect from colleagues, clients, and judges alike.
